TUC wants FG to probe Paris funds bailout to states

- From Kayode Ekundayo, Lagos

The National Executive Council (NEC) of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), has called on the federal government to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and ICPC to probe the use of Paris funds bailout released to states.

TUC, in a communique issued at the end of its NEC meeting held in Lagos, jointly signed by the National President, Bobboi BalaKaigama and Musa-Lawal Ozigi, Secretary General, at the weekend, said it observed that the funds were not used for the purposes they were meant for hence the need for the Federal Government to direct the EFCC, ICPC to probe the use of the funds.

The union in a 16-point demand kicked against selective implementation of minimum wage as suggested by the Vice President, Yemi Oshinbajo, saying that such move would be retrogressive of Nigerian workers

“The NEC- session kicks against selective implementation of minimum wage and demands that the minimum wage implementation should be holistic and not selective. Minimum wage is for all and should remain in the exclusive list,” the union stated. The union called for the establishment of Secondary Education Commission (SEC) in Nigeria.

“The NEC- in session observes that unlike other tiers of education in the country, there is no commission in place to regulate the operations of secondary school education in Nigeria. This is in spite of the in fact that the bill for the setting up of this commission was passed into law more than a decade ago.

We call on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, put in place this commission so that the much desired changes can be seen in the operation of our secondary education in Nigeria”. TUC also called for the revival of Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and National Economic Reconstruction Fund (NERFUND), saying their activities could boost government’s economic diversification programmes, stressing that the two organisations should be adequately funded to enable them extend appropriate finance for economic programme particularly to farmers in the rural areas and small scale businesses.
