Golf Icons Open ..... A golf rebirth

-

forever. We moved through all roads in search of quality people who could support a truly quality golf event.

The Bauchi State Governor and passionate golfer, Barrister Muhammed Abubakar, heeded our call. Sir Lucky Omoluwa, a Board of Trustees member of both IBB International and the Kaduna Golf Clubs, the man who sits atop Pinnacle Communications heeded our call. NASCO Foods equally joined the Dream Team of sponsors. And the magic just happened.

In history of golf tourneys in all three big clubs in Jos, that is Rayfield, Rhino and Lamingo, last weekend’s Icon tourney was unsurpassed. The Lamingo Club was filled with a crowd of more than 500 golfers. Over 259 golfers made the Day 1 game when it was clear we made plans for just 200 golfers. We pacified all by ordering 50 extra golf souvenirs at such short notice.

Governor Lalong played in the two days game. Bauchi Governor and Sir Lucky Omoluwa were adequately represented. Nasco made impact by showing off their wares. General IBM Haruna, the BOT Chairman of IBB Golf Club was there. So was former President of the Nigeria Golf Federation, Dr. Peter Deshi. Then Senator John Shagaya who penned down a moving speech that you will read on this page was all smiles imagining that the event could indeed come real. It was a moving moment when Shagaya thanked Governor Lalong for taking care of the three Clubs in Jos.

Then something that has never happened in this century occurred. The last day of the tourney saw professional golfers being matched with amateurs to ensure this was a classic Pro-Am event.

When it was all over, Daily Trust Associate Director/ Business & Strategy, Aliu Akoshile, who stood in for Media Trust Chairman, was filled with emotions. He believed the tourney should be an annual event and Governor Lalong concurred.
