Gombe Bulls start final 8 with big win

- By David Ngobua

Gombe Bulls yesterday began the 2017 Kwese Premier Basketball League Final 8 holding in Kano at the Sani Abacha Indoor Gym with a big win as they defeated Nigeria Customes of Lagos 87-68.

The win was different from the team’s experience when they started the Savannah Conference 6 play-offs in Kaduna when they lost their first two matches against Kano Pillars and Niger Potters.

Gombe Bulls were stretched in the first quarter by Nigeria Customs ending the game 21-21 before taking the game beyond the Lagos boys by ending the second quarter 46-38.

In the third quarter, they maintained lead and won 64-55 before concluding the encounter with a commanding victory of 8768 points.

Gombe Bulls’ Akeem Sulaiman was the top scorer of his side with 12 points while Ibe Agu assisted him with 11 points to end as the two top scorers.

In spite of high scoring performances of Afuwape Okiki, Akinwale Seun and Solomon Igbo of Customs with 18, 14 and 11 points respectively, it was not enough to trouble the Gombe side.

Gombe Bulls coach, Samson John said the team will improve with every game. “I can assure you that our remaining matches will be better because we hope to improve with every game. Fans will see better games as from tomorrow (today)”

Gombe Bulls faces Kano Pillars today in another grudge match. In other fixtures for today, Niger Porters will lock horns with Plateau Peaks, Kwara Falcons engage Hoops and Read just as Oluyole Warriors will battle Nigeria Customes.
