Squash to take centre stage at National Youth Games

The president of the Squash Federation, Boye Oyerinde has assured that the game of squash will be one of the focal points in Ilorin when the third edition of the National Youth Games commence in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital from September 7-17.

The pressident said all technical officials needed for the sport have undergone intense scrutiny and training and will soon hit Ilorin for the games that will feature U17 in the male and female categories.

Almost all the states of the federation are expected to take part in the squash event, which he said will be used to groom new talents for the sport in the coming years.

“I can assure you that squash will never be the same again as all stakeholde­rs are united in the drive to take the sport to new heights”, he declared.

Meanwhile, Brition Tom Ford and Nigeria Yemisi Olatunji have both won the maiden edition of Chamberlai­n Squash Open titles after thrilling finals at Lagos Country Club.

PSA world number 165, Tom Ford picked up the crown of the inaugural championsh­ip after a hard earned four games victory over Nigeria’s e Actuaries, a financial engineerin­g and legal advisory company has unfolded its inaugural edition of Ibadan Mesiogo Golf Championsh­ips.

The profession­al tournament, themed ‘Beyond Golf in Ibadan’, holds from October 4-8 at the Ibadan Golf Club.

It has a prize tag of N10 million and will parade top profession­al golfers from Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world.

The top ranked golfers from the event will qualify for the 5th edition of the coveted 3e Actuaries Equatorial Guinea Open in Mongomo from December 13- 16.

The Ibadan Mesiogo Open is one of the internatio­nal qualifying tournament­s billed for Sao Paulo, Dubai, Harare, Cape Town and Los Angeles, leading to Mongomo with a crop of 50 profession­al golfers, drawn from over 30 nations, including Nigeria, battling for $250,000.

The CEO of 3e Actuaries, Olawale Opayinka, said the event was conceived to use golf to celebrate Ibadan and restore the historic city as an economic hub.

In the women category, Yemisi Olatunji played Udeme James Udeme began the match on a bright, as she took 3-1 lead, while Yemisi tried to slow the tempo and take Udeme out of the attacking mode she’s shown over the last few days.

The organisers said amateur players will also be drawn to the tournament on October 8.

According to them, all amateur golfers in Nigeria that wish to participat­e are eligible. The maximum handicap for participan­ts is 20 for Men and 28 for ladies.

Meanwhile, the IMEGA Awards will honour eminent Nigerians and those who have contribute­d to the developmen­t of the game of Golf. The awards will include IMEGA Lifetime Achievemen­t Award, Ibadan Mesiogo Heritage Award, Legacy Award for sports, Best Golf course in Nigeria, Best Nigerian under 18 Young Golfer (male and female) among others.

The awards hold at the University of Ibadan Internatio­nal Conference Centre on October 7 with a gala night never look assured in her subsequent game with her opponent.

Yemisi smelling blood calmly dispatched Udeme 11-7 in the first game 11-6, and 11-9 in the decider to clinch the tournament inaugural trophy.

The male winner got $1,805 in prize money and the runnerup got $1,235.

The female winner was N200, 000 richer, while the runner-up got N150, 000.
