SSANU, other varsity unions to commence strike Monday
The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non -Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) under the auspices of Joint Action Committee (JAC) have jointly agreed to embark on an indefinite strike action effective from Monday, 11TH September, 2017.
The unions disclosed this at a press conference held yesterday in Abuja.
A communiqué jointly signed by Presidents of NAAT Sani Suleiman, NASU Chris Ani and SSANU Samson Ugwoke stated that the strike would be total as had been endorsed by members.
The unions explained that the strike became imperative due to non-implementation of the agreements the Federal Government entered with nonteaching staff unions in 2009 on variety of issues affecting the system and welfare of their members.
“The current labour crisis in our universities is as a result of breach of implementation of the FGN/ University non -Teaching Staff Unions Agreement of 2009 and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government and JAC in January 2017,” the unions said, specifying the payment of Earned Allowances to Nonteaching members of Staff in Universities and Inter-University Centres, a review of the governance system of universities, among others as some of the issues.
