Farmers should be working with researchers - ABU Don

- From Isa Sa’idu, Zaria

The Director of the Ahmadu Bello University’s National Extension Research and Liaison Services (NAERLS), Professor Mohammed Khalid Uthman, yesterday urged farmers to always be consulting researchers for them to reap the full benefits of their chosen vocation.

Professor Uthman made this known while interacting with grassroots farmers during Farmers Field Day and Merit Award Ceremony at Biye village, Giwa local government area.

He said the importance of farming and farmers to the economy of Nigeria was manifested when it was mentioned as one of the sectors that took Nigeria out of recession.

Professor Uthman added, “Farming is more profitable than any business in life, because it is the only business you plant just one seed and harvest more than 300 of what you have put. This is a blessing from our creator and the farmer is the most important individual in the world, because you cannot even worship your God unless you have eaten food. You shouldn’t be depending wholly on the government if you want to grow this profession. NAERLS would facilitate more loan opportunities for you.”

The Sole Administrator, Giwa local government area, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Sale, advised members of the farmers’ cooperative society to always channel their complaints to him.

Earlier, the Chairman, Biye Farmers Cooperative Society, Malam Idris Magaji, said the event was organised to appreciate NAERLS’ efforts in assisting farmers in the area.
