Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival hots up

The battle for supremacy at the 2017 Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival intensifie­s with some of the matches living up to their billing.

In the Men’s Group A, Akin Akinrimisi was the first to keep fellow contestant­s of the tournament partnered by 9mobile on their toes with a shock 6-3, 7-6 win over second seed Kunle Onamusi while Tunde Olujobi also got the better of Kayode Ifejiaka with a stunning 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win. Olujobi thus set up a meeting with Sola Abati.

Lanre Oladimeji defeated Emma Agbator is expected to come under a stern test against Matt Holmes, the top seed and defending champion.

Tunde Fashanu justified his rating by beating Dele Oshiga 6-3, 6-1 and will meet Peter Mgbeahuru who defeated Kola Ashiru 6-0, 6-3.

Bimbo Okubena, a former leader of the club’s ladder board bagged a 6-3, 6-4 win over Omon Ehibagbolo just as Ndubuisi Ekwempu was too handful for John Nwosu with a 6-0, 6-1 win but should have his hands full when he battles Deji Dare, who rallied from a set down to beat Segun Aluko, the section captain 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Others that scaled the first hurdles are Wale Adesida, Kola Sofola, Victor Ogbeide, and Deji Oshikoya are among the others through to the next round.

In Group B, Adedapo Adebayo made irrelevant the ranking as he upsets top seed Tunde Bajela while Seyi Adewunmi beat Gbonju Akingbade 6-0, 6-1. Femi Ifedayo and Wole Ogunade also progressed with wins over c nude and Jacob idinye.
