Board to engage 203 midwives, community health workers

- By Nana Yahaya

The FCT Primary Health Care Development Board (FCTPHCDB) has said it will soon engage about 203 midwives and community health extension workers.

The Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr. Matthew Ashikeni, in an interview with City News, said the board will do that as soon as final budgetary approval is received from the National Assembly.

He also said the board will engage 50 midwives under the Save One Million Lives Initiative of the Federal Government who will be posted to various hospitals to strengthen the human resource base and provide additional support for sustainable health care facilities in the FCT.

He said the board is overseeing 249 PHCs that have been constructed by the FCT Administration, some by area councils and others by benefactors such as foreign embassies.

He said EU officials recently commissioned and handed over the renovated Gui PHC centre along Airport Road, and another in Abaji Area Council.

Dr. Ashikeni said the aim is to improve health care and provide quality infrastructure as well as human resources, in addition to equipment and procurement of drugs.

Towards this end, he said this year’s 12 additional new PHCs would be constructed two per area council with the aim to reduce the burden on secondary and tertiary health facilities.
