3 nabbed for di­vert­ing re­lief ma­te­ri­als

The Benue State Deputy Gov­er­nor, Engr. Ben­son Abounu yes­ter­day dis­closed that three peo­ple have been ap­pre­hended at the In­ter­nally Dis­placed Peoples (IDPs) camp in Makurdi for di­vert­ing re­lief ma­te­ri­als.

Abounu made the dis­clo­sure while an­swer­ing ques­tions from news­men shortly af­ter he su­per­vised the dis­tri­bu­tion of re­lief items to the flood af­fected 21 lo­cal gov­ern­ment ar­eas in the state.

“I got re­port that on Tues­day some­body re­moved about fifty bulbs and two bags of rice and then threw them over the fence to two of his friends who were wait­ing for him out­side, but thank God the three of them were ap­pre­hended,” he said.

The deputy gov­er­nor who is the chair­man of Flood Re­lief Com­mit­tee, added that those peo­ple ap­pre­hended were vic­tims tak­ing refuge at the camp but he has di­rected camp of­fi­cials to de­camp them.

He as­sured that all stake­hold­ers were rep­re­sented in the camp and his com­mit­tee was en­sur­ing that the re­lief items were mon­i­tored for equitable dis­tri­bu­tion to those truly dis­placed.
