Two arrested over Ogun DPO shooting

Two members of the armed robbery gang that shot and injured the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Division in Ogun State, CSP Adeyinka Akingbade, have been arrested by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS).

The DPO was shot by the gang after receiving a distress call about the invasion of a hotel in Itele-Ijebu area of the state on Wednesday. He was leading his men to the scene but was ambushed by the robbers who shot him severally at close range.

The State Police Command spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, stated yesterday, that on receiving the informatio­n, “the Commission­er of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, gave a marching order to the officer in-charge FSARS, DSP Uba Adam, to fish out the hoodlums within 24 hours.

“The FSARS team swung into action immediatel­y and their effort paid off after six hours when the hideout of the robbers was located,” Oyeyemi said.

He disclosed that “on sighting the police, however the robbers engaged them in a gun battle which lasted for about an hour. At the end of the encounter, two of the robbers, Wasiu Ganiyu and Azeez Komolafe were arrested while the leader of the gang known as Mungo Park was shot dead.

Others, he stated further “escaped with bullet wounds. Recovered from them were two AK47 riffles with 120 rounds of ammunition.

“The Commission­er of Police, CP Ahmed Iliyasu, who was highly elated about the gallantry of the FSARS men, appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals to report anybody seen with gunshot wound to the police.

“He also prayed for quick recovery of the DPO who he described as one of the best performing DPOs in the command.”
