CITY NEWS Taskforce impounds 68 motorcycles over traffic offences

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Task Force have once again embarked on arresting vehicles and commercial motorcycles that ply unapproved routes in the Lagos metropolis, and drive or ride against traffic.

In an operation the operatives executed on the Lagos Island at the weekend, they impounded six vehicles and 68 commercial motorcycles for allegedly driving and riding against traffic on top of the bridge at Apongbon, Lagos Island.

Confirming the arrests, the Chairman, Lagos State Task Force, Superintendent of Police Olayinka Egbeyemi, who led the enforcement operation, said that the offence was against the Lagos State Road Traffic Laws of 2012.

Egbeyemi wondered why motorists and motorcyclists could be driving or riding against traffic on top of a long and busy bridge without any fear of headon collision with oncoming vehicles.

According to him, the Lagos State government was working round the clock to ensure adequate security and free flow of traffic around all bridges across the state.

He, therefore, warned those involved in what he called illegal commercial activities under and around the bridge, who according to him, include traders, mechanics, touts and miscreants, to vacate the area at Apongbon with immediate effect, or, he threatened, they would be made to full face the wrath of the law.

He said, “We are issuing a final warning to all those concerned to vacate immediately, including those involved in illegal touting using all kinds of uniforms.”

Egbeyemi said that the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has invested, and would continue to invest huge amounts of money in constructing bus terminals across the state for the benefit of every member of the public.

He said the on-going construction of a BRT corridor from Oshodi to Abule-Egba is meant to decongest the metropolis of traffic gridlock.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, has directed that all those drivers/ riders arrested be charged to court immediately.
