Earned a – Chukwuemeka
Morah Chukwuemeka is a graduate of Cooperatives Economics Management from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka in Anambra state. The 27-year old man said his desire to be self-reliant early in life drove him into designing plaques. He spoke about how he has used the business to train himself and other achievements.
challenges in this business?
Of course! Just like any other business, there are several challenges in plaque designing. Producing a plaque can really be demanding and stressful. Another thing is the cost of materials which makes the product expensive. Most of the materials are imported. Besides, the epileptic power supply has not helped matters. We need electricity to power our machines. All the same, the challenges are not really a big deal especially when compared with the rewards derivable from the job. For me, the gains outweigh the pains.
What have you achieved from the business so far?
There are so many. Essentially, I sponsored myself in school through this business. Not that my parents could not afford to take care of my academics, but I had always had that entrepreneurial spirit within me and wanted to be self-reliant. I have also trained several persons on this job, including those who are still working with me.
Any message for other youth and government as well?
The youth must believe in themselves that they have potentials inside of them. Let them remove pride and learn any kind of business or career, no matter how menial, as long as it is genuine. They should never despise their little beginnings. Although my company is fully registered, it started small. For the government, they need to create the enabling environment for entrepreneurs to thrive.
Most youth are reluctant in going into business because of the harsh business environment in Nigeria. Apart from power supply issue, the financing is not readily available for them to start. The cost of raw materials is yet another impediment. So government should do more in these areas.
