Only N/Assembly can handle restructuring – Gemade

- From Eyo Charles, Calabar

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Senator Barnabas Gemade, has insisted that elected members of the National Assembly are best suited to handle the issue of restructuring.

He therefore urged the Federal Government to give attention to the yearnings of the people as a way of addressing the matter once and for all.

Gemade said restructuring was an important issue which should not be treated with levity; but one that ought to go through due process.

Gemade, a former governor of Benue State, spoke with journalists in Calabar at the on-going National Sugar Development Council southern region sensitisation workshop on the Sugar Master Plan for stakeholders.

He said in recent times, there had been “avalanche of contributions and opinions by everybody on how they think the issue of restructuring should be handled.”

“We have seen that restructuring is on the front burner of national discourse by everyone. Different people seem to postulate different ideas on how best it should be handled.

“This is one issue that can best be handled at a formal talk shop, not by just anybody, but by the elected representatives of the people, which in this case is the National Assembly. It must go through due process,” he said.
