Nigerians in Malaysia await envoy’s resumption

- From Mutiu Ganiyu, Kuala Lumpur

Months after new ambassadors were posted to their countries of mission, the Nigerian Ambassador to Malaysia, Alhaji Nurudeen Mohammed is yet to resume.

Daily Trust findings at the embassy located at Jalan Ampang Hilir, Kuala Lumpur and Nigerian communities in Malaysia revealed that Mohammed’s resumption was awaited.

The last Acting Head of Mission, Mrs Janet Odeka is now the Ambassador in Zimbabwe. She confirmed to Daily Trust that she has reported in her new posting.

“Technically, I’m no longer in Malaysia because I’ve reported to my new posting in Zimbabwe. There is someone acting,” she disclosed.

The last substantive Ambassador, Alhaji Sheu Ringim returned to Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs ministry in 2015.

Efforts to speak to the Acting Head of Mission, Mr Y.D Farouk on the ambassador’s resumption yielded no result as several calls put to the embassy’s official land line by Daily Trust were not answered.

A source confirmed that: “It’s true that there are so many issues and decisions that cannot be addressed at the embassy and in Nigeria communities until the new ambassador resumes duty in Malaysia. We learnt that ‘agreemo’ between Nigeria and Malaysia on his deployment has been signed weeks ago, I wonder what is still delaying him.”

However, another source said he learnt that some ambassadors were still being screened by security of their host countries and some may be rejected.

“I hope the new ambassador to Malaysia is not having security issue,” he said.
