I wasn’t queried over Kanu’s bail - Abaribe

- By Ismail Mudashir

Chairman of the south east senator’s caucus, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP, Abia) yesterday faulted the report that he was queried by his colleagues for standing as surety for the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu.

Some of his colleagues had told Daily Trust that they queried Abaribe over his role on the bail of Kanu during a closed session that lasted two hours on Tuesday.

Abaribe was said to have responded to the query by saying that he stood for Kanu as chairman of the south east senators.

But during plenary session yesterday, Abaribe raised a point of order, saying, only what the presiding officer (Saraki) said at the end of the closed session was the sum total of what transpired at the closed session.

He said the headline of the story “IPOB: Senators query Abaribe over Kanu’s bail” does not in any way reflect the three points read by the Senate president. He requested the senate to investigate the story.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary, urged his colleagues to desist from revealing whatever transpired in the closed session to the press.

He mandated the Senate committee on ethics, privileges and public petition chaired by Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo) to investigate the matter.

Before filing the report, our correspondent tried reaching Abaribe through his phone number but he did not answer several calls put to him, even as he did not reply the text message sent to him.
