‘World class’ Vom-Ganawuri road now in sorry state
The 40-km Vom - Ganawuri federal road which was commissioned in 2013 and described by the then Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen as ‘world class standard’ has fallen into a sorry state.
Daily Trust has observed that commuters now take detours around Ganawuri villages in Riyom LGA to come out through the junction by a major checkpoint mounted by Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), or risk getting trapped in the muddy road.
The worst spot is located 31 kilometres to Jos and has in the last few weeks caused several delays as motorists are expected to pay a ‘toll gate’ fee of N200 and above to young villagers who work day and night to manage the road during the rainy season.
The Vom - Ganawuri road which links Vom, a Jos outskirt with Ganawuri in Plateau’s Riyom local government area, had in recent times faced congestion from motorists avoiding the bad Jos Saminaka road axis.
Daily Trust gathered that the Vom - Ganawuri road construction was initially awarded to PW Nigeria Ltd in 1999 with 2001 as completion deadline, but the deadline failed, with the authorities blaming the failure on the rocky mountain over a wide patch that had to be cut through.
Onolememen had at the commissioning in 2013 recalled that the project was completed by the Federal Ministry of Works in 2012.
Several attempts to get officials of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in Plateau State to comment on the deteriorated state of the road yielded no fruitful result.
