Detectives from the Lagos police command have arrested a 29-year-old man, Mr Ebuka Okeke, for allegedly defrauding a lady, Ogochukwu Ogbuehi.

Okeke was alleged to have collected the sum of N1.9 million from Ogbuehi under the pretence he would marry her, only for the lady to discover later the suspect had dumped her for another woman.

The suspect allegedly collected the said sum between March and July this year. The police said that the victim, after discovering that she had been swindled, reported the matter to the police, prompting the arrest of Okeke.

The police added that the lady had waited for the boyfriend to visit her family to perform the marriage rites as agreed, but he was not forthcoming. Then she made efforts to retrieve her money from him but couldn’t.

The matter was reported to the police at the Area M command, Idimu, Lagos.

During interrogation, Okeke admitted collecting the said amount from the victim on the agreement that he would marry her but that he found it difficult to convince his family to accept her.

Okeke was subsequently charged before the Ejigbo chief magistrate’s court with obtaining money under false pretence. He pleaded not guilty. The presiding magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum, and remanded him in prison custody pending when he will perfect the bail condition.

The matter was adjourned till October 18, 2017.
