32-yr-old carpenter arrested allegedly for defiling 12-yr-old girl

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

A 32-year-old carpenter, Olasunkanmi Gbenga, has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 12-year- old girl on his workshop table at the Isolo area of the Lagos metropolis.

Gbenga allegedly took advantage of the victim when she went to a workshop close to his to mend her school bag. He was said to have lured the girl into his shop where he had carnal knowledge of her.

The prosecutor, police Inspector Clifford Ogu, said the accused committed the offence on September 5, 2017 at Isolo, Lagos. Ogu said, “Gbenga lured the girl back to the workshop as she was leaving, put her on the table and defiled her. The accused covered the girl’s mouth with a bag while defiling her to prevent her from shouting.”

According to Ogu, the accused gave the girl N100 after the defilement and asked her not to tell anyone. The girl, however, narrated everything that the accused did to her to her mother.

“But on getting home, the victim’s mother noticed some blood stains on her clothes and asked her what happened. The victim narrated her ordeal to her mum who raised an alarm that led to the arrest of the suspect by some neighbours,” the Inspector said.

The victim was later handed over to the police at Ishaga.

Consequently, the suspect was yesterday charged before an Ikeja chief magistrate’s court.

Gbenga, who resides in the Ishaga area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of defilement and indecent assault. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The offences contravened Sections 135 and 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015 (revised). One of the sections prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.

The chief magistrate, Mrs Taiwo Akanni, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case until October 10, 2017 for mention.
