Stakeholders mark Literacy Day in Kebbi
Stakeholders have marked the 2017 International Literacy Day (ILD) in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
The theme of the 2017 ILD was ‘Literacy in a Digital World’.
In his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), Prof. Abba Abubakar Haladu, said the theme highlighted the challenges and opportunities in the promotion of literacy in the digital world.
“The over-riding message is that we need to harness the exponential benefits of ICT in the effort to bring literacy to more and more individuals at a much faster pace than ever and probably even at a much lower cost, so that the ICT can contribute to the global commitment to expand access to learning and improve its quality,” he said
The Commissioner of Education of the state, Alhaji Muhammadu Magawata Aliero, said adult literacy has been neglected in the entire education sector.
“It is my considered opinion that, despite attempts to reduce adult mass illiteracy in Nigeria, adult literacy has probably remained the most neglected component in the entire education sector,” he said.
In his remark, the Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, said his administration has been making efforts to address the challenges facing education in the state.
