Buratai seeks partnership with rights activists

- By Ronald Mutum

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has called on Human Rights activists and media practitioners to partner with the Nigeria Army to check insecurity in the country.

He spoke yesterday in Abuja during the Directorate of Army Public Relations Media Workshop and Second /Third Quarters Study Period.

The Chief of Army State, who was represented by the Commander Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General John Malu said the misconception by Human Rights groups and journalists alleging abuses by the Army should take a positive dimension.

He called on Human Rights activists and media practitioners to partner with the Nigerian Army and the Directorate of Army Public Relations (DAPR) in the collective effort to bring an end to security challenges facing the country.

He said, “The reportage and editorial dimensions taken by journalists will in no small measure aid the efforts of the military.”

Director, DAPR, Brigadier General Sani Usman said the theme of the work shop, “Enhancing Human Rights during Internal Security Operations through Effective Information Management,” was to address current challenges.

He said it was chosen to examine the role information management officers play in the various theatres of operation, where the physical battle space witnessed aggression in the form of propaganda.

He added that psychological warfare is also being used, which was compounded by advancement in information communication technology.
