Court remands 11 for disrupting peace in Kebbi

ASharia court sitting Birnin Kebbi has remanded 11 youths for allegedly disrupting the peace of Zauro, a community in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The accused were arrested by the police when they started throwing stones at the palace of the district head during a meeting called by elders of the community over in increasing cases of rape, theft, drug addiction and other social vices among the youths.

A police witness , Inspector Ishaka Abdullahi, head of police unit in the community who testified before the court, said while the community leaders were holding a meeting, the youths tried to force themselves into the venue but were stopped by the police. He said that the youths used stones and broken bottles to damage police vehicles.

While giving his evidence, an elder of Zauro, Abubakar Maisamari said the youths had earlier sent a warning letter to the elders. “While we were holding a meeting about enacting a law to instill discipline in our community, they sent a letter warning us that whatever decision we took they would not agree,” he said.

Corporal Faruk Muhammad who represente­d the Police, said the youths were being charged for conspiracy, inciting disturbanc­es and obstructio­n of peace.

While speaking to journalist­s, the lawyer to the 11 accused youths, Barrister Ahmad Zumaru said the elders did not follow due process in trying to enact the law and that the police did not do what was right by aiding the community.

The presiding judge, Muawiya Shehu, who adjourned the case to Monday of next week, directed that the 11 youths be remanded in prison custody.
