-

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced one Thomas Egear to two years’ imprisonment for stealing N80, 000 under false pretences.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. SuleAmzat, sentenced Egear, 26, without an option of fine adding that the prosecution was able to establish that the convict sold for N80, 000, some used car batteries not belonging to him.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, said that the accused committed the offences in conspiracy with another man still at large, on Sept. 22 at the Super Saver Supermarket, CMD Road, Magodo, Lagos.

Ihiehie said that Egear sold the batteries to a trader, Mr Michael Rabiu, who reported the case at the Ketu Police Post.

“While the complainant was walking on Magodo Road, looking for scrap materials to buy, the accused called him and told him that he had a heap of scrap batteries for sale in a compound at ShangishaMagodo Road.

“The complainant followed him to the place and saw the batteries, and the accused told him that the manager of the said supermarket asked him to sell the batteries. “The complainant gave him the sum of N80, 000.

“As he was about to carry the said batteries, some security men in the supermarket stopped him. “The complainant tried to explain that he had paid for the batteries but the security men told him that the person who sold them was not the owner,” he submitted. Ihiehie said that Egear disappeared after collecting the sum. (NAN)
