CITY NEWS Hit-and-run driver kills FCT police task residents on pedestrian in Gwarinpa vigilance

Asuspected hit-andrun motorist has knocked down a pedestrian feared to be an insane man in Gwarinpa.

A police source said the deceased was trying to cross the road on Third Avenue when he was knocked down yesterday morning.

The source said motorist escaped.

The Gwarinpa Divisional Police Officer, CSP the Nuruddeen Sabo, confirmed the incident.

He said an unidentifi­ed person who is mentally retarded was about to cross the road when he was knocked down by a vehicle.

“The driver of the car zoomed off and escaped,” he said adding that officials from the Motor Traffic Department took the corpse to the Kubwa General Hospital.

He said investigat­ion was ongoing. The FCT Police Command has advised residents of the territory to be security conscious in the ember months.

A statement by the command spokesman, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, enjoined residents, especially foreign nationals assigned with police escorts to always endeavour to move along with their escorts when visiting remote and isolated areas.

He said the command has reaffirmed its resolve to protect lives and property of residents of the FCT, adding that it has strategica­lly deployed uniformed and plaincloth­es police operatives across the territory to keep vigil on a daily basis.

He said the command has further advised the public in case of any distress, to call the command control room via emergency numbers 0832003913, 0806158193­8, 0705733765­3 and 0802894088­3.
