Ex-Ogun governor asks Buhari to unite Nigeria

- By Saawua Terzungwe

A former governor of Ogun State, Otumba Gbenga Daniel, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to exert his energy on the struggle for national disunity instead of fighting corruption.

He said fighting corruption alone was not the panacea to Nigeria’s current challenges.

Daniel stated this yesterday, in Abuja, while declaring his intention to run for the office of national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former governor explained that the various agitations for restructuring in different parts of the country, and calls for secession were “referendum not for secession, but a referendum on leadership trust.”

Daniel said the anti-graft war was not playing any significant role in ending poverty in the land, adding that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government had failed to deliver on its campaign promises to Nigerians.

“That is (the) president’s leadership litmus test. But the low side of his administration reveals a bit of possible why. The solution to a national problem cannot just be in fighting corruption; the solution is to first fight national disunity.

“It is disquieting that the APCled government claims to focus on fighting corruption, while facts on the ground suggest that Nigeria has become worse off and is sinking low even in graft.

“I think I am most eminently qualified to correct some of our mistakes of the near and remote past, having served as a chief executive officer of one of the most complex states in Nigeria, Ogun. Having supervised and won elections twice on the platform of the PDP among others,” he said.
