INEC registers over 2m voters ahead of Anambra gov’ship
A total of 2,158,171 eligible voters have been registered to participate in the November 18 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has said.
Director, ICT in the commission, Mrs. Bimbo Oladunjoye, who disclosed this at the publication and presentation of official Register of Voters (RV ) to political parties’ candidates, in Awka, said 50.3% of the registered voters were females, 49.6% males, while the largest number of the captured voters were students.
She also disclosed that a total of 2,280 voters attempted multiple registration, while 666 and 1,546 persons moved into and left the state, respectively, during the continuous voters registration exercise.
Also speaking, the Supervisory National Commissioner, Prof. Okechukwu Ibeanu, noted that this was the first time in the history of Nigeria that 37 governorship candidates were contesting for one position.
He commended all the parties for conducting themselves peacefully in the on-going campaigns, hoping that the trend would continue till the day of election.
Earlier in his speech, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji, said the exercise was in line with Section 30 of the Electoral Act 2015 (as amended), which provided that register of voters for an election should be issued not less than 30 days before the election.
