Osun to use parliamentary system in LGAs
Ten years since the last exercise, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has announced January 27, 2018 for the conduct of local government elections in the state.
However, chairman of the commission in the state, Otunba Segun Oladitan, said only councillors would be elected during the poll because the state would use the parliamentary system of government at the local government level.
This means the council chairman would be elected from one of those that emerged as councillors.
Oladitan, who disclosed this at a press conference in Osogbo, yesterday, said the election would hold in all the 378 wards across the state.
He explained that the election could not take place in the last 10 years owing to litigations, saying all the cases had been resolved.
Oladitan said the electoral empire would not collect money for nomination from candidates, but the political parties would pay certain administrative charges to the commission.
He said so far, 36 political parties had registered to participate in the election, and assured that the commission would conduct free and fair elections.
Oladitan, therefore, sought the cooperation of political parties, stakeholders and all the people of the state to enable the commission achieve a successful poll.
