Kaduna disobeying court over sack of district heads – Lawyer

- From Christiana T. Alabi, Kaduna

The lawyer to the embattled district and village heads in Kaduna State, Mohammed T. Mohammed, has accused the Kaduna State Government of disobeying court injunctions.

The government in June disclosed its intention to implement the recommendations of the committee it set up which stipulated that the 4,766 district and village heads be reduced to only 77 district and 1,429 villages head as they existed prior to 2001.

According to the Commissioner for Local Governments, Alhaji Jafaru Sani, the restructuring was to reduce the burden that bloated payroll imposed on local government councils.

Meanwhile, a high court in Kafanchan had also in June granted an interim injunction restraining Governor El-Rufai and the state House of Assembly from implementing the order to sack some traditional rulers from their positions.

El-Rufai, the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Adara traditional council, Gbagyi traditional council and the state attorney general were also restrained fron sacking the district and village heads.

In spite of the court injunction, El-Rufai had gone ahead with his plan as there was a recent move to rename the districts and chiefdoms.

The lawyer said, “We have filed all our processes but we need to respond to the objection filed on behalf of the government. The court must attend to this and resolve same before we can make progress.”
