CITY NEWS My husband is irresponsible, woman tells court

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

A 28-year-old woman, Sofiat Kareem, yesterday told an Ikorodu customary court that her husband was an irresponsible person who had not been caring for his family.

The woman said that her husband of one year had abandoned the upkeep of their home and left the task to her, and “has been running around town like an irresponsible person.” Sofiat claimed that sShe has been bearing the entire burden of feeding the family.

Her 31-year-old husband denied the allegation, but endorsed her divorce request.

Following the plea of the petitioner, the court president, Mrs Funmi Adeola, dissolved the one-year-old marriage. Mrs Adeola ordered the couple to go their separate ways since efforts to reconcile them had proved abortive.

The court ruled that both parties must properly take care of their one-year-old child.

“The fact that you are separated does not mean that the fruit of the marriage should suffer. The child’s education, feeding and medical allowances must not be affected. Henceforth, the father must pay the sum of N10,000 monthly for the child’s feeding.

“Both parents should be responsible for the child. The father has been granted visitation right to his child at any reasonable time of the day. Custody of the child has also been granted to the mother because the child still needs motherly care,” she said.
