2 remanded for allegedly stabbing woman to death

- From Eugene Agha, Lagos

Two men, Nduka Okafor and James Aikhionbare, will be spending the next one month in prison custody pending the outcome of an advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution on a case of murder the police levelled against them.

A counsel from the Panti police station, Mr Goddey Osuyi, told the court that Okafor, 62, and Aikhionbare, 38, conspired to stab one Mrs Mabel Okafor to death at her residence over a yet-tobe detailed circumstance.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on August 17, 2016 at House J68B, Close 9, Victoria Garden City, Lekki, Lagos. A reliable police source said that the suspects had earlier been arrested but were allowed to go on bail at the police station.

The source added that the suspects were, however, rearrested by police detectives from the Ikoyi Division. The case was later transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, Lagos.

It was also learnt that the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, based on the outcome of the investigation, directed that the suspects be charged to court.

Consequent upon the directive, the two men yesterday appeared before an Ebute Meta chief magistrate’s court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

But the magistrate, Mrs A.S. Okubule, ordered the remand of Okafor and Aikhionbare at the Ikoyi Prisons pending an advice from the Lagos State DPP.

Okubule adjourned the case to November 20, 2017.
