Oboh: Nigerian female golfers would compete anywhere

- By Orkula Shaagee, with agency reports

A United Kingdom-based Nigerian female golfer, Georgia Oboh has said that Nigerian female golfers would compete favourably anywhere if exposed to more competitions.

Oboh stated this immediately after emerging winner of the female U-16 Category of the 4th edition of the Awa Ibrahim Junior Golf Championships.

“We need more of these competitions.

“It is good that Nigerian children are learning golf; within the next five years, we will be hosting big events in Nigeria.

“In U.K., lots of golf courses are located in forest areas, just outside the main cities, but in Nigeria, it is the opposite, as we have golf courses in the centre of cities.

“This is the reason for short-range golf course in Nigeria unlike the long-range in the U.K.; some golfers may not be able to express themselves,” Oboh said.

She added that though the level of golf playing in Nigeria was not at par with the U.K. yet, she saw prospects in the Nigerian Challenge.

“From my experience, the sport is still growing in Nigeria, and I don’t expect someone playing for just three years to be at my level.

“I have been playing golf about 10 years ago now, about all my life playing golf. The main thing is to ensure that more children are encouraged to play golf,” she said.
