NURTW executive member, 37, commits suicide in Ibadan

- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

A 37-year-old former secretary of ACOMORAN, a subsidiary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at the LASKAB Oniyanrin Unit, Ibadan, Oyo State, Sina Adebisi, who was residing in a one-room apartment at Oke Seeni part of Oke Padre in Ibadan, yesterday committed suicide.

When reporters visited his house at Oke Padre yesterday, many sympathisers were wondering if Adebisi had truly committed suicide, or he was assassinated. Some of his neighbours said they just woke up on yesterday to find him dead.

The house where the man hanged himself is a one-storey building, with delicate wooden staircases. The deceased’s room was upstairs and the rope with which he allegedly killed himself was tied to a window frame, with the soles of his two legs almost touching the ground as his lifeless body dangled.

The younger sister of the deceased, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi, who volunteered to speak with reporters, said her brother hailed from Obaagun, Ikirun, in Osun State but she could not ascertain the cause of his death because, to her knowledge, Adebisi was not owing any debt.

Afolabi said, “I don’t even know what happened to him because he was not owing any debt. I still saw him yesterday (Monday) when he was working before I went to hawk. He was a motorcyclist, and he plied routes close to where I live. People just suddenly came to call me this morning about what happened.”

The branch chairman, NURTW, Okada Joint 8, AyeyeIbikunle Road, Ibadan, Kabiru Akinwale (Kebe), confirmed that the deceased was a member of my unit.

At the time of this report, our correspondent could not reach the police public relations officer, Mr. Adekunle Ajisebutu, to confirm the incident as his phone number was unreachable.
