Police set to combat kidnapping in Edo, Delta, Bayelsa states
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 5 Headquarters in Benin, Abubakar Adamu Muhammed, has charged Commissioner of Police in Edo, Bayelsa and Delta States to rise to the occasion and ensure security of lives and property.
Adamu gave the charge yesterday in Benin at a meeting with commissioners of police in the states to examine the current crime wave, especially the spate of kidnapping in the zone. He also charged them to commence intensive patrol in all the nooks and crannies to dissuade incessant kidnappings in the zone.
According to him, commissioners of police should de-emphasize priority on investigation of cases and focus on patrol, visibility policing and other crime preventive measures in order to effectively combat crime in their respective states.
He noted that there are idle policemen at the various units at the command headquarters in the zones and directed the CPs to identified these units and deploy them to divisions for visibility policing and patrol.
The AIG also urged the various commands to engaged their state intelligence bureaus, noting that intelligence gathering is key in the fight against crime and criminality.
On the Inspector-General of Police’s ban on road blocks, Abubakar directed the various commands to comply with the directive.
He note that some policemen abandoned their duty posts for illegal duties, warning that whoever was caught engaging in illegal duties would face severe disciplinary action.
