Sokoto Old Market traders grieve losses in Saturday inferno

- From Rakiya A. Muhammad, Sokoto

Many shop owners at a section of the Sokoto Old market are counting their losses following the fire incident that occurred Saturday.

No life was lost but valuable goods were destroyed in the incident.

A section of the market was in April this year gutted by fire. The latest incident affected the Ahmadu Bello Way section of the market, close to Tashar Kyame. The raging fire was noted to have been prevented from spreading to other sections of the market by men of the state fire service who suppressed and extinguished it.

The cause of the inferno was yet to be ascertained by press time.

The affected traders who deal in assorted items such as confectionaries, flour, sugar, among others lamented that their shops were razed, and goods worth millions of naira destroyed in the incident.

The Vice Chairman of the traders association, Almustapha Ladan appealed to authorities as well as well-meaning individuals and organisations to help the traders.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Isa Sadiq Achida who was at the scene of the incident, commended the state police commissioner for their presence at the scene of the incident to prevent “a lot of things” being lost to hoodlums.

Meanwhile, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, has commiserated with the victims of the fire.

A statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashir Rabe Mani, said Wamakko expressed the dismay that lots of properties were lost to the inferno, and solicited urgent support to the victims.
