Approach national unity as a process, Agbese tells Nigerians

- By Latifat Opoola

Veteran journalist and Executive Director, Mayfive media Limited, Dan Agbese, has urged Nigerians to approach national unity as a process rather than a project.

Agbese was speaking as a Guest Lecturer, at the 2017 annual FRCN Annual Lecture, with the theme, “The Role of the Media in promoting National Unity and Productivity,” in Abuja yesterday.

He said the role of the media in the process of national unity is to tell the truth at all times, stressing that attention placed on the media is not misplaced.

Agbese also said it is impossible for a repressed media to partner with nation builders because their role is dedicated to the public good and hence must not be taken for granted.

He said the media “can really drive nothing. Their role is to support the drivers of nation in national development”.

Also speaking, Kano State Governor Abdullahi umar Ganduje said Nigeria has crossed the red line in the past six months where vested interests, hate speech and divisive materials flooded the media.

“There is a photo trick in Nigeria now where a very ugly face can change to a very beautiful or handsome one,” he said.

The governor, who was the guest speaker, urged Nigerians to respect diversity and work for peace at all times.
