Abuja fun seekers decry insecurity, poor facilities at Jabi Lake Park

Fun seekers have decried the poor state of facilities and insecurity at the popular Jabi Lake Parks in the FCT.

Jabi Lake is about 10. 4 kilometers away from the city centre.

Some of the fun seekers who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the park in Jabi, said the porous nature of the park was an “accident waiting to happen.’’

A businessman, Mr George Nzeogwu, who was with his family told NAN that he was apprehensive whenever he visited the park.

“There are lots of things to be careful about here, especially when you realise that you are on your own and nobody might come to help you out.

“The water is unbanked and there are no life guards, the boats are scary and there is also no sign of an ambulance here in the event of an emergency.

“There is no organised security and we know the current security situation in the country; so when I come here with my family, I keep a close eye on them.”

Another fun seeker at the park, Mrs. Tina Ojukwe, said safety and security seemed not to be on the priority list of the park management as they expected individuals to handle it themselves.

“I bring my children here because it is cheap recreation. A place people can relax at no cost. Maybe this is why the park management does not care about our security and safety; sometimes, you see children almost falling into the water.

“The environment is very porous, people walk in and out as they like, without proper security checks,” she said.

Mrs Queeneth Abbah, said the nonsecuring of the bank of the lake was very worrisome and the authority should do something about it.

“On weekends, you see a lot of fun seekers yachting or riding water bikes in the lake but there is no ambulance around in the event that an accident occurs. It can be very exciting to watch these riders engage in healthy competition in the lake but at the same time also very scary,’’ Abbah said

Alhaji Umar Shuaib, Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Committee (AMMC) said a Ministerial Committee on Jabi Lake had been set up.

“As I am talking to you now there is a ministerial committee looking into Jabi Lake status as it relates to the Abuja Master Plan,” Shuaib told NAN. (NAN)
