Unscientific practices won’t help – Animal Care President tells poultry farmers

Poultry farmers in the country have been advised against resorting to pettish practice, in a bid to earn big profits.

The President of the Animal Care Services Konsult, Dr. Olatunde Agbato, who delivered paper on the ‘Efficiency in Production as a tool to survive a Recession in the Poultry Industry,’ at the ongoing Poultry Show in Abeokuta, also reminded the farmers that only the efficient producers with advantages of economies of scale are likely to remain profitable in the business.

He noted that small and marginal players will continue to fade out if they do not expand or merge together to remain competitive.

“Even though the industry on the whole will expand and increase to bridge the supply-demand gap, but there will be attrition in the number of players. We must get ready for this as it must surely happen,” Dr Agbato, who has been in the industry for nearly 30 years said.

Speaking further, Dr Agbato urged poultry farmers in the country to take their destinies into their hands in the absence of better operating enviroment.

He said poultry farmers must control what they can, improve what they can and eliminate waste that is within their capacity to eliminate.

He quoted an old maxim which says there are two ways to make profit, it is either you earn more or you spend less and advised that if the system is making it impossible to earn more, the farmers should try to spend less and still get good results.

“Improving on our production efficiencies is the key to spending less so that we can survive this time. It is not merely an option-it is the only option,” he declared.
