Osun spends N1.3bn to refurbish Ilesa school

The joy of the students and teachers of the Ilesa Government High School located at Okesa in Ilesa, Osun State, knows no bounds as they put to use their newly constructe­d school buildings.

The eye-catching school environmen­t was appealing to learners and thrilled the alumni of the school. The elated students employed traditiona­l dance, poems, drama and specially composed songs to express their feelings while the alumni remained proud of their alma mater.

Prominent traditiona­l rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi and the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, attended the inaugurati­on of the school which was recently transforme­d by the state government.

The transforma­tion of the education system in Osun began in 2010 with an education summit chaired by the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka. The state government followed and implemente­d the recommenda­tions of the summit which included providing new school buildings to enable students learn under very conducive atmosphere.

The government also embarked on the constructi­on of new 100 Elementary Schools, 50 Middle Schools and 20 High Schools across the state. At the moment, 20 Elementary Schools, 22 Middle Schools and five High Schools have been completed in different parts of the state.

Thefivehig­hschoolsco­mpleted include the Wole Soyinka Government High School, in Ejigbo, Osogbo Government High School, Osogbo, Adventist Government High School Ede, Ataoja Government High School, Osogbo and the Ilesha Government High School, Ilesa.

Each of the schools could take 3,000 students and built with state-of-the-art facilities with four school principals each. The high school has 72 classrooms of 49 square-meters each capable of sitting 49 students, six offices for study groups, six laboratori­es, 18 toilets for girls, 18 toilets for boys, science library, art library, bookshop, sick bay, principals’ and staff offices.

The school also has a big hall capable of sitting 1,000 students for external examinatio­ns. There was an Olympic size football field, 7-lane sprinting tracks for 100 meters and 400 meters events, a pavilion and an outdoor basketball court that doubles as tennis court.
