‘We want to catch Nigerians young with books’

- By Francis Arinze Iloani

Cornerstone Insurance Plc Foundation has said that its 2017 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is aimed at catching Nigerians young through book donations.

The Foundation, a section of FIN Insurance disclosed this in Abuja this week when it donated 200 English and Mathematics textbooks to Model Secondary School in Maitama district of Nigeria’s capital.

Presenting the books, Coordinator of the Foundation, Cordelia Ekeocha, said the gesture was part of its 2017 CSR tagged “Bookathon.”

The school was one of the 10 schools across Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt where 2,000 books were distributed.

Ekeocha said the book donation was meant to equip school libraries with basic educational materials and boost students’ academic performances in Mathematics and English examinations at state and national levels.

The Acting Managing Director of FIN Insurance, Ademola Abidogun, said the gesture would be expanded to include additional science subjects towards building young scientists that will move Nigeria forward.

Vice Principal of the school, Mr Robert Job Order, after receiving the books said some of the students have no English and Mathematics textbooks and that such would benefit from the gesture.

The Head Boy, Raphael Collins, assured that the books would not be abandoned as the students have good reading culture. He urged the Foundation to sustain the good gesture as it will benefit the poor.

Chioma Ukoha who represented the Head Girl was happy about the donation. She said reading remains the only way students could pass their examinations but have often been challenged by lack of key textbooks.
