Robbers in police uniform vandalise ATM at UniAbuja

The police in Abuja have confirmed that the command’s Criminal Investigat­ion and Intelligen­ce Department (CIID) has commenced investigat­ion into last week’s robbery incident at the University of Abuja were suspected robbers in police uniform broke into an Automated Teller Machine in the university.

Responding to a text message to confirm the veracity of the incident, the Divisional Police Officer of Iddo which covers the university, Salman Manjo, said “the case has been transferre­d to the CIID FCT Command, please.”

A source at the university told Daily Trust that two of the robbers were in police uniform and came to the United Bank for Africa (UBA) ATM located close to the convocatio­n ground, where they met some students transactin­g at the machine.

He said the hoodlums tied them up before vandalisin­g the machine and carting away an undisclose­d amount of money.

He said the security men noticed unusual activity at the place and went to investigat­e but when they saw men in uniform thought they were policemen. The robbers attacked and over powered them before tying them up as well. He said one of the security men was injured in the incident.

Spokesman of the university, Waziri Garba, in a telephone interview confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, but added that the university’s security unit has handed the matter to the police.
