Enugu LG election rerun: Thugs attack VON DG

Suspected political thugs yesterday assaulted the Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) and a chieftain of the All Progressiv­es Congress (APC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, at his hometown, Eke, Udi local government area (LGA) of Enugu State.

The assault of the VON DG occurred during the local government rerun election in the town at Central School Eke polling centre at about 1.30pm yesterday.

As voting was in progress, the suspected thugs, who were said to be acting on the orders of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, surrounded Okechukwu and snatched his ipad and mobile phone from him.

But the quick interventi­on of the policemen at the polling centre saved Okechukwu from the aggressive thugs who were ready to cause more trouble at the centre.

However, gathered policemen it that was the quickly recovered the ipad and phone from the thugs and handed them over to Okechukwu.

But none of Okechukwu’s assailants was arrested.

Briefing newsmen at the scene, the VON DG, who was apparently surprised by the incident, accused opposition politician­s of ordering the attack on him.

Okechukwu said they were after him for insisting that democracy should be upheld at the grassroots through the conduct of free, fair and transparen­t elections.
