TMG asks Buhari to intervene in EFCC, DSS feud
The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the inter-agency rivalry between security agencies especially the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The organisation also called for investigation and sanctions for those that may be found wanting in the interest of the nation.
Daily Trust reports that DSS operatives on Tuesday in Abuja prevented operatives of the EFCC from arresting the former Director General of the DSS, Mr Ita Ekpeyong.
Reacting to the development, the Chairperson of the TMG, Dr Abiola AkiyodeAfolabi, Vice Chairman Mr Okeke Anya and NorthCentral Zonal Coordinator Mr Salifu Haruna told Daily Trust that such development was disheartening at a time when government was building citizens’ confidence in institutions of governance.
They spoke to our correspondent at the sidebar of the presentation of a report on the Anambra State Gubernatorial Election.
Akiyode-Afolabi said the ‘show of shame’ was not only disappointing but an embarrassment to Nigerians especially that the two main actors of the crisis (EFCC and DSS) were appointed by the same ruling party.
“It is important that the President directly intervene now and not to leave this development to anyone to handle. This portend danger to the security and integrity of the country especially that there are important elections coming up in 2018 before the General Elections of 2019. This also call for a review of conflicting roles and overlapping responsibilities of security and other governmental agencies in the country,” she said.
