We killed Oyo lawmaker for identifying one of us – Suspect

- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

A suspect paraded over the murder of a member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Gideon Aremu, has said the lawmaker was killed when they robbed him because he identified one of them and raised alarm.

The slain lawmaker represented Oorelope constituency under the platform of Labour Party before he was murdered in his Alakia residence on July 1, 2016.

The suspect, Kola Arobiole, 30, who confessed to have pulled the trigger that killed the lawmaker, was among the 22 criminal suspects arrested for various criminal offences ranging from armed robbery, ritual, cultism, theft, and burglary.

He said, “We never planned to kill him. After we searched and there was no good money found on him, we took his phone. And as we were about to leave, he sighted one of us who was known to him, he grabbed him and started shouting. This made us to feel uncomfortable, so I was asked to shoot him to prevent the people from tracing us. He did not cooperate with us.”

The Police Commissioner, Mr Abiodun Odude, at a press briefing yesterday said the runaway killer of the lawmaker was arrested in another robbery act in Ibadan after returning from Ekiti where he hid after killing the lawmaker last year.

He said the suspect was arrested with two other members of his gang, Taofeek Bashiru, 28, and Suleiman Oladiti, 27, while operating on a motorcycle to rob two other people of their valuable properties including cash.
