Revenue agents dare Ayade over levy on carbon emission

- From Eyo Charles, Calabar

Despite the Cross River State government’s ban on collection of levies on carbon emission from residents and industrial and commercial firms following public outcry, a private firm which was earlier saddled with the task, SH SKYHOLLA NIG. LTD said it will continue with the exercise.

In a letter signed by one Ekpo Archibong, registrar of the state Revenue Court 4, with reference No: RCT IMC/ GOCRS/ECE/O4/2017, the firm summoned the manager of Peace Mass Transport company, Calabar branch to appear in Court 4, Moore Road, Calabar, to explain why the company refused to liquidate or pay the sum of N160,000 to off set the debt on carbon emission levy.

The letter reads; “You are therefore hereby summoned/ commanded in the name of his excellency, Governor of Cross River State to appear before the revenue court sitting at Moore Road Calabar on Thursday November 23.

The revenue firm said it was unaware of the government directive, stopping the collection.

But in a letter dated November 16, 2017 signed by Mr Christian Ita, chief press secretary and media adviser to Gov Ben Ayade, all such levies were suspended.

The letter had warned that any agents, consultants or members of the public who made any attempt to collect such levy would be arrested and prosecuted by the court.
