Traders attack FCDA official in Abuja court premises

- By Clement A. Oloyede

Irate traders of Utako market in Abuja yesterday attacked and injured on an official of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) at the FCT High Court in Jabi.

The official, identified simply as Mr. Dennis, was chased by the angry traders into the Legal Unit of the court after he was accused of allegedly conniving with the court officials to adjourn their case indefinitely.

Police men at the court premises however intervened and stopped the traders from inflicting further injuries on the official.

The traders, who had mobilized to the court for hearing in a case between Utako Market Traders Association and Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), were disappointed after they were told that the court would not sit because of the absence of the presiding judge.

The development left the traders furious because there was no new date scheduled for the case when they enquired from court officials.

Thereafter, they resorted to chanting anti-government songs and hurling abuses at court officials, accusing them of conniving with FCDA officials to stall the case. This led to disarray in the court.

When the mob sighted one of the officials of FCDA, however they chased him in annoyance but he managed to escape into the legal unit of the court but the traders followed him there.

It was gathered that the Abuja Municipal Council Area (AMAC) had given notice to the traders that the market would be renovated but that shop owners would retain ownership before others were considered.
