Making Christmas fun with home décor

- By Olayemi John-Mensah

Christmas decoration, adornment with ornaments and lights strategically placed in every corner, herald the coming of the festive season.

The modern Christmas tree which later expanded to different kinds of décor is traced back to Western Germany in the 16th century when Christians brought trees into their homes and decorated them with gingerbread, nuts and apples.

Home decoration has become part of Christmas celebration across the world. Nigerians are not left behind as homes and roads glitter in this special time of the year as people adorn their homes with different colourful flowers and lights to beautify and make their environment attractive.

However, with little effort one can transform one’s home into a festive gathering place for family and friends this holiday season. This can be done by fixing in place different décor that will turn the home into a merry residence and an attraction to guests.

An event manager and decorator, Mrs. Ebube Janet, said making the décor as simple as possible instead of clouding up the house will make great meaning of adding beauty to the home.

She said “we don’t have to spend too much to get what we need to beautify our home this season”, adding that one can even use cardboard paper, create some designs and fix them in different corner of the house.

Mrs Ebube said everybody loves beautiful environment and it is good to make your home beautiful during this season adding that flowers can be pasted on the wall, staircase, door posts and others for effect.

In 2004, then Pope John Paul called the Christmas tree a symbol of Christ. This very ancient custom, he said, exalts the value of life, as in winter what is evergreen becomes a sign of undying life, and it reminds Christians of the “tree of life” of Genesis 2:9, an image of Christ.
