Abia female shoemakers, others for oversea training

The Michael Okpara auditorium premises Umuahia was yesterday agog with various cultural displays as Abia women displayed various cultural dances in celebratio­n of Abia Women Summit and Carnival 2017.

The carnival, put together by the office of the First Lady, was designed to celebrate Abia women and their culture and exhibit finished products by women.

Speaking at the grand finale of the programme, the State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu commended his wife, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu for organising the programme and more especially, identifyin­g some women involved in some men-dominated endeavours for recognitio­n, and announced that the women who made shoes or repaired motorcycle­s would join the first batch of Abia youths scheduled to travel overseas to learn modern ways of plying their trades.

Earlier In her speech, the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu urged women to continue to uphold the Igbo culture, saying that foreign culture had influenced the Igbo culture so much.

She said some Igbo women and parents took pride in saying that their children could not speak Igbo, and advised them against such attitude.

In her speech, the President of National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Abia State chapter, Lady Eunice Nwaigwe stressed that women and mothers had big role in teaching and transferri­ng the cultural heritage of Abia State to the youths and children.
