CRIME Police sergeant dismissed over murder in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has dismissed one Sgt Akpa James from service for allegedly killing a man in Ajaokuta LGA of the state.

Sgt James, before his dismissal, was attached to the Special Protection Unit (SPU), Zone 8, Lokoja.

According to a statement by the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP William Aya, it was alleged that the deceased, Ohimi Ojima, before he met is untimely death had an argument with security men in Ajaokuta Steel Company when he was ordered to make a U-turn to the direction of the road where he was coming from.

“The victim insisted and went to an extent of attempting to disarm the sergeant and was fatally injured in the process and while being rushed to ASCL Hospital Ajaokuta for medical treatment, he died.

“The sergeant has been arrested, detained, tried in orderly room and dismissed from the force. He will be charged to court for prosecutio­n at the end of the proceeding­s,” Aya said.

The PPRO also refuted reports in some sections of the media that the deceased was a younger brother to the Executive Governor of Kogi State.

“The report which reads that the deceased is a younger brother to the Executive Governor of Kogi State is false in its entirety. The victim hailed from Ibaji Local Government of Kogi State.

“The Command urged members of the public to always confirm the true nature of incidents before sending such to social media or any other platform, so as not to mislead the good people of the State,” the statement said.
