‘One chance’ killings on the rise in Niger – LG boss

- From Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, Minna

The Chairman of Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, Alhaji Ado Abubakar, has raised an alarm over increasing cases of killing by persons operating commercial vehicles, known as ‘one chance’ operatives.

Addressing political appointees in the council, yesterday, the chairman disclosed that unmarked taxi drivers and gang members would pick unsuspecting passengers, who they killed midway into the journey and throw the corpses away.

He said security report obtained by the council indicated that the incidents have been on the rise.

Our correspondent reports that a suspected ‘one chance’ driver was set blaze by a mob on Friday at Madalla market along Abuja-Kaduna Highway.

“Most of the victims are strangled to death and their corpses thrown into the bushes by the perpetrators,” he revealed.

He said it was difficult to track the perpetrators because they avoided designated parks and picked passengers by the roadside, adding that most of the incidents happened between Zuba and Tafa on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

He said the council is liaising with security operatives to find a way of addressing the menace.

He called on residents of communities along the expressway to always be vigilant, while also appealing to passengers to avoid unmarked taxis and also board vehicles from designated motor parks.
