CITY NEWS Court ejects family from apartment over N8,000 rent debt

- From Jeremiah Oke, Ibadan

A customary court siting in Mapo, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday ordered the family of Mr and Mrs Agboola to vacate a room apartment they have been residing at SW846, Yemetu Alaadorin, Ibadan, over non-remittance of rent and security fees cumulative at N8,220.

Agboola admitted he was owing his landlady, Mrs Wosilat Ajadi, the said amount but explained it was due to a job problem and begged the court to give him time to source for money to get another apartment.

“It is true that I am owing her due to the irregularities of my job. I want you to give me some times to look for money to get another house,” he begged the court.

Mrs Ajadi had told the court that the Agboolas rented a room apartment from her and since they moved into the apartment, they have not been paying the rent and other expenses in the house.

She said, “The only money they paid was in March 2015 when they moved into the house. Since then, they have neither been paying for the rent nor for security and electricity bills. I don’t want them again in my house. Even if they don’t pay for the one they have used, let them move out of the apartment. I want to use that particular room.”

The president of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, ruled that the family should vacate the apartment in January 2018, warning that the court would not hesitate to move their belongings out of the apartment if they didn’t heed his directive.

He ordered the family to pay the said amount to the aged landlady and ensure the apartment was well cleaned before they move out.
