Yobe sponsors 150 patients for VVF surgeries
The Yobe State Government has paid for Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) operation on 150 women at the newly established VVF Center in the state capital, Damaturu.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Bello Kawuwa, told newsmen in Damaturu yesterday that the surgery was to reduce the number of fistula patients in the society.
“The surgery was to advance our free healthcare services by way of reaching out to the poor and most vulnerable women at the grassroots,” he said, adding that since inception of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam’s administration, pregnant women, children under the age five and accident victims had been enjoying free healthcare services.
“Other medical interventions include treatment of Boko Haram victims, while the administration is spending N20 million monthly for the procurement of free drugs in our hospitals”, he said.
He said over 500 medical professionals were recruited recently to fortify the four general hospitals expanded and retrofitted in four local government headquarters of Gashua, Gaidam, Potiskum and Damaturu.
Kawuwa also said 384 medical students were on the payroll of Yobe State government, with a bond to work in the state after graduation.
“Nineteen doctors who have graduated from University of Maiduguri are joining the state health sector in due course. Also, 384 medical students of Yobe extraction are on the verge of completion in various fields to join us soon,” he said.
